4x4 FAQs

What do I need to start an off road adventure?

The most important part is, of course, the four wheel drive vehicle.  Even a new Jeep bought right off the lot is a very capable four wheel drive that can immediately be taken off road with a few safety additions. These additions are very important, and can often be bought at the dealer or on the way to where the roads end. They are tow hooks, tow straps and a fire extinguisher mounted close to the driver, just in case. Four by fours frequently get stuck, and they need to be freed by either another four wheeler or a wince set up. Tow hooks and a good tow strap are the most widely used four wheeling accessory. Do not use chains, they can break and turn into flying projectiles more deadly than a bullet. Trailer hitches do not double as a tow hook, they can also break off and become missiles. Just remember to be courteous to other people who are enjoying the great outdoors by staying on designated trails and areas, a four by four can quickly damage a delicate environment.

What are some off road driving tips?

Join an off road club. They go on many outings in large and small groups and are always willing to offer advice, whether it is mechanical or driving tips. They know about parts that are good to get, things to avoid and where to get them as well as how to put them on. Many groups get together not just to four wheel, but also to work on their rigs and soup them up. Many innovations have been found during off road clubs, both in installing parts and testing them out. There are thousands if not millions of little tips that can make off road driving easier and more rewarding. Decreasing the pressure in the tires from regular road driving pressures, such as 33psi, to lower pressures such as 20-15psi will make the wheels have much more traction on loose materials. Be careful not to lower the pressure low enough that the tire loses its bead and completely deflates. Straddling gaps and ruts is always preferred to having a wheel down in them, an easy way to get stuck or high centered and have wheels spinning in the air.
